With everything a movie needs, from comedy to action and a plot centered around an adorable kitten, Keanu was a perfectly solid B-list movie. The storyline focuses on Rell Williams (Jordan Peele) and his cousin, Clarence Goobril (Keegan-Michael Key) who set off on a mission to save Rell’s new kitten from the hands of gangsters after Rell’s home is ransacked. The suburban duo take on new personalities to fit in with the local gang and hilarity and second-hand embarrassment ensue as the two wimps try to pass themselves off as the baddest thugs around.

Though Key and Peele are phenomenal sketch comics on their Comedy Central show, their big screen debut was less than satisfactory but not without a certain endearing quality that made it hard to dislike. Whether this quality was the cute cat or the lovable cast of original characters, is hard to say. It may have even been the plotline which was a refreshing take on a typical action movie.

The biggest failing of the film was the attempt at constant comedy which works great for 10-minute sketches but wasn’t the best approach to a 100-minute long feature. Even worse was the fact that many of the jokes fell flat, making the entire film seem drawn out and at certain moments, a bit contrived. But that isn’t to say the movie was without its shining moments of true comedy that one would expect from a Key and Peele production.

Overall, Keanu was enjoyable, funny and definitely worth a watch but Key and Peele shouldn’t plan to cancel their show for the big screen anytime soon.
